Need help understanding the form? Everything you need to know is explained below:

Keys to Understand

  1. The form only includes questions that affect the tank price. Don’t get wrapped up in the small details. Those are handled during the drawing review process after your order. We don’t start building the tank until you approve the final drawing.
  2. Include as much detail as you can in the description field and file upload for photos and drawings. It doesn’t have to be perfect engineering quality – just give us as much information as you can to jumpstart the initial design process.
  3. The exact final price will be displayed at the bottom of the form, above “Add to Cart” button. Add the tank(s) to your cart, and use the cart page or checkout page to see the shipping cost and options.

How the process works

  1. Order your tank online. With instant pricing including shipping, this is as easy as it gets.
  2. Review and approve your drawing. Your first drawing will be emailed within 1 business day. You can ask questions, make changes, and confirm all dimensions. We’ll only start production when you approve the final revision.
  3. Track your order during production. With our nifty order status tool, you can look up the current activity on your project in our manufacturing process.

Select your tank shape from the list.

If you don’t think there’s a perfect match, that’s OK. Just select the closest shape or “other”. This field is for initial drawing information only.

Enter only the overall (maximum) length, width, and depth of the tank.

Yes, we want to know every single detail for your tank, but it’s not important for pricing single or low quantity tanks. You can include those details in the file upload or tank description fields.

Choose your tank thickness – 1/8″ (0.125″ or 3.2mm), 3/16″ (0.188″ or 4.8mm), or 1/4″ (0.250″ or 6.4mm)

What thickness should I choose?

General guidance:

  • At minimum, choose at least the thickness of your old tank, but consider upgrading to 3/16″ or 1/4″ for additional corrosion protection, strength, and flatness around welded fittings.
  • Tanks up to under 50 gallons:
    • 1/8″ minimum
    • 3/16″ as nice upgrade
  • Tanks 50 to 100 gallons:
    • 1/8″ minimum
    • 3/16″ ideal
  • Tanks 100 to 200 gallons:
    • 3/16″ minimum, 1/4″ as a nice upgrade
  • Over 200 gallons:
    • 3/16″ minimum, 1/4″ ideal
  • Tanks over 24″ wide:
    • 3/16″ ideal

Reasons to increase thickness:

  • If your tank is top surface is broad – i.e., wider than 20-24″  we strongly recommend upgrading to 3/16″ thickness, even if it is under 100 gallons. The wider surface area will have much less distortion around welded fittings, which means a flatter, truer surface where water won’t pool.
  • If your tank is located in the forward 50% of boat length, it will be subject to higher slamming forces and should be beefed up in thickness and mounting security.
  • OEM factory tanks are often woefully under built. If you’re in doubt, why not just go heavy duty? Increasing the thickness generally only adds about 10-15% to the total cost. The only drawbacks to a thicker tank are weight (they’re heavy anyway when full of fuel) and very slight reduction in volume (1-2%).

Choose the aluminum grade.

In general, if you didn’t arrive at this page already knowing the answer, choose 5052. 5052 is the most common material for any aluminum fuel tank to be made from.

The difference: Both are equally corrosion resistant. While 5086 is about 2x the tensile strength, it’s also 2x the cost of 5052. 5052 is the most common marine alloy and we can regain the difference in strength by simply increasing the thickness and installing more baffles. Read more about marine alloys here.

Add up the total number of pickups (supply/withdrawals), returns, and other threaded fittings.

*Don’t include the fill, vent, or sending unit. These are already accounted for.

Examples:

  • If you have a single gasoline engine, enter “1”.
  • If you have 2 gasoline outboard pickups, enter “2”.
  • If you have 2 diesel engines and a generator which need their own supply and returns, you might enter “6” for 3 pickups + 3 returns.

Include any other extra threaded ports or fittings such as drains, dipstick ports, extra bungs for pumps and cleaning systems, etc.

We have NPT bungs (female or male), o-ring bungs, flared fittings at our disposal for any configuration you need.

Select what sending unit option you want.

  • Electric KUS Sending Unit 240-33 Ohms
    • High quality reed-switch style sending units compatible with any marine fuel gauge or NMEA network.
    • Installed in our premium welded sending unit mounting flange (SAE 5-hole pattern).
  • Mechanical Visual Sending Unit
    • A visual gauge directly on the tank top.
    • We can only install these in tanks 24″ or less in depth (height).
  • Mounting flange only
    • We’ll weld our premium sending unit mounting flange and cap it for testing/shipping if you want to use your own 5-hole SAE sending unit.
    • We strongly recommend against reusing an old sending unit.
  • No sending unit
    • There will be no sending unit or mounting flange.
  • External Sight Glass
    • Valved external transparent tube for visually checking fuel level.
    • This can only be used on diesel or water tanks only – not safe for gasoline.

Select when you want to receive your tank.

The leadtime is how long it will take to from placing your order to tank shipping.

  • 2 weeks is standard
  • Not in a hurry: choose 4 weeks for a discount.
  • Need it ASAP: choose 1 week for an expedite fee.

Select “single tank” or “multiple mirrored or matching tanks”.

We’ll apply a 10% discount for matching or mirrored tanks, since we’re saving a bit of design time and it’s always more efficient to build multiples.

Note: you still have to add “x” quantity of tanks to the cart.

What is allowed for this discount:

  • The tanks are exactly identical.
  • Port and starboard tanks are the same shape, but mirror images.
  • The tanks are the same in all dimensions, but the top fitting locations are a bit different.
  • Forward and aft tanks have the same end profile shape, and only vary in length and fitting location.

Select your tank contents.

Gasoline, diesel, or other.

Why is this important?

  • Gas and diesel tanks have different requirements for labeling.
  • Gas tanks must have all fittings on or above the tank top.
  • Diesel tanks can have fittings (e.g. drains, bungs) anywhere.

Type your boat information.

We use this to name and identify your drawing, and so that we’ll be able to look up the tank dimensions for future customers.

Type any relevant details about the tank.

This is where you can list the sizes and types of fittings on the tank, describe the shape and dimensions, and any other key features. Use the file upload below to add drawings, hand sketches, or photos of the tank.

Remember, we will send you a professional construction drawing for review and approval before we start machining the tank parts. Any information you can provide that gets us further along towards the final configuration is helpful.

Attach files such as drawings, sketches, and photos.

Tips and tricks:

  • Dimensions by photo: use a tape measure and write the all the dimensions on the tank edges and fitting locations, then take a few photos to show us.
  • Use our drawing templates if you’re not a great artist!
  • If you have a CAD file, email that in reply to your order confirmation or send to [email protected] after your order. Note that we’re still going to create our own CAD model and it’s only useful to see the external dimensions and fitting locations, so don’t burn too much effort trying to model sheet metal bends and fittings.

Shipping Information

The shipping options and cost will be displayed in the cart and checkout screen when you add the tanks to your cart.

You have the option to select LTL Freight, UPS Ground, or Local Pickup. The shipping options and price are accurately calculated to include the shipment(s) dimensions, weight, and your location.

Read more about each option below:

LTL Freight means your item will ship on a pallet and delivered via large truck.

Freight shipping is calculated based on your shipping address and the size/weight of the tank. Freight shipping on a pallet is always safest shipping method for the tank to arrive undamaged.

Locations for freight shipping

  • Commercial address:
    • Typically zoned as commercial or industrial real estate, with reasonable tractor-trailer access and a loading dock or a forklift. Commercial addresses are assumed to be open for business daily during regular hours, and do not require liftgate or appointment services. This is the lowest cost location.
  • Terminal Pickup:
    • The cart and checkout page will display an option for pickup at the closest carrier terminal to you, with an address and distance. When the shipment arrives at the terminal, you will be notified to arrange pickup. Terminal pickup is also the lowest cost option.
  • Limited Access or Residential:
    • Residential – Residential addresses are automatically detected in the checkout page. These deliveries require an appointment delivery, liftgate service, and often transfer to a smaller box truck.
    • Limited Access or non-commercial includes Marinas, Yacht Clubs, Camps, Churches, Construction Sites, Convents, Country Clubs, Estates, Golf Courses, Farms, Military bases, Mini-storage warehouses, Nursing homes, Prisons, Rectory or Schools, and other such locations.
    • Residential and limited access both add about $200 to the shipping cost of LTL freight.

LTL Freight Add-ons

  • Liftgate – select this option your commercial address is not equipped with a loading dock. It is automatically included in residential and limited access deliveries.
  • Shipments 96″ OR LONGER: a length dimension of 96″ or greater incurs an oversize surcharge on LTL shipping. If your item length can be reduced to 95″, you’ll save a lot of money on shipping.

Ocean vs Air Freight and International Freight

Yes, we can send your freight shipment to Hawaii, Alaska, and internationally. The rates presented will be ocean-going routes, which typically add 2-3 weeks to normal transit time.

We can get air freight rates as an optional upgrade to your order, but they must be requested manually one at a time to the carrier. These are called “spot quotes”. Let us know if you want to know the cost difference between ocean and air freight.

Final Words

We work hard to ensure that shipping costs are reconciled with the customer to guarantee a fair and precise charge. Should the actual cost be lower than what you’ve paid, a refund for the difference in shipping will be issued. Conversely, if the payment falls short, we will notify you and issue an invoice for the extra amount during the tank design phase. Our freight calculator is typically very accurate, making such adjustments infrequent.

UPS Ground Delivery.

If the shipment is small enough, a UPS Ground rate may be presented.

A word of caution:

  • Despite our best packaging efforts, UPS and other ground carriers are notoriously hard on heavy and larger packages. If you are presented with both UPS and LTL freight options, consider the value in using LTL Freight to ensure you custom tank arrives safely and on time.

You also have the option to pickup your item at our manufacturing facility located in Covington, LA.

Local pickups will be charged sales tax at our physical location in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana (9.25%) and you will be notified by email and phone when your item is complete and ready for pickup.
